My name is Ria McCormick and I live in Inkoo Finland with my 3 children and husband.
For the past 20 years I have worked in child education which I absolutely love and could never think of doing anything else.
I recently started my own daycare and with it a shift in focus and drive.
I personally believe every teacher needs to think about what is important when responsible for little human beings.
Each child deserves to learn, grow and develop in a safe and caring environment. To be heard, respected and to be given a chance to voice their individual needs, values and have access to understand what is happening in their world and the chance to not only make a difference but that instils lifelong values.
Education, what matters?
What else is important to learn in early years apart from the curricular guidelines of math, numbers and ICT? Which all the above has become a massive focus by governments across the nations for young children lately, please! Give me a three-year-old who does not know how to turn on or use a smart phone. I’m not saying we should not have it but is it really that necessary in under school age children? Should we be investing half our resources and time towards it? In my opinion, not.
What I believe we should be doing is right under our nose, issues that are happening all around us. Most of which are being ignored in early years, such as sustainability, developing a more eco literate environment & how to support an ecologial view of life. In a nut shell, caring for our world and our future, and what we can and should be doing to help it.
We need Action!
I started dreaming of a learning environment that offers possibilities for children to participate and engage in protecting our world and making a difference daily, a way of living without even thinking about it. Yes, we do the normal recycling but what else can we do to make an impact. A ‘curriculum’, that has a strong ethos towards our environment and world we live in and what is needed to protect it. A curriculum to instil lifelong values and responsibility so our future generation (your children) are prepared and know how to live in our big beautiful world.
So, I decided to write a blog (my first blog ever!!! So, I apologize beforehand for any blogging mistakes this will be filled with) of our journey through 2019 carrying on making big sustainable changes, reorganising our priorities and developing our eco-friendly curriculum to make the biggest impact any other day care has ever made and to share it with like-minded people like yourself.
There will be no stress with each post it’s more when the mood strikes and how we are getting on with a focus on different topics and subjects.
Please feel free to email me at firstname.lastname@example.org if you have any questions about a post you see here. Thank you so much for dropping by.
So exciting! Can’t wait to start
