Giving Your Child the Gift of Another Language 🌍

Why learning English from an early age can be a wonderful start for your child’s future

Children have an incredible ability to learn languages.

Unlike adults, they don’t need vocabulary lists or grammar lessons. Young children learn through play, songs, stories, repetition and everyday conversations. An additional language can simply become part of their world.

But parents often ask us:

Will English confuse my child? Will it affect their mother tongue? And what if they don’t understand any English when they start?

Will English affect my child’s mother tongue?

Learning an additional language does not mean replacing the child’s first language.

Your child’s mother tongue is incredibly important. It connects them to their family, emotions, culture and identity — and it should continue to be spoken, read and enjoyed at home.

English simply becomes another language alongside it.

Multilingual children may sometimes mix languages or borrow a word from one language while speaking another. This is a normal part of learning more than one language — not a sign that they are confused.

Why start when they’re young? đŸŒ±

Young children learn languages very naturally.

Imagine an educator saying “Let’s wash our hands” every day while walking to the sink. Soon the child understands the phrase without anyone sitting down and teaching it.

Songs, games, stories, mealtimes and play provide hundreds of these little opportunities.

No tests. No vocabulary lists. No pressure.

Just language becoming part of everyday life.

But my child doesn’t speak any English!

That’s absolutely fine.

Children don’t need previous English skills to benefit from an English-rich environment.

Educators use gestures, facial expressions, pictures, routines, repetition and play to help children understand. Often children spend some time listening and observing before they begin using English themselves.

One word becomes two. Two words become a little sentence.

And gradually, something that was once completely unfamiliar starts to feel normal.

A gift for their future 🌍

English is one of the world’s most widely used languages. It connects people across countries and plays an important role in travel, education, technology and working life.

We can’t know where our children’s lives will take them.

But we can give them tools that may open doors later.

And perhaps the greatest gift isn’t perfect English.

It’s a child who grows up thinking:

I can communicate. I can learn another language. I’m not afraid to try.

One important thing for parents ❀

Keep speaking your own language at home.

Talk, read stories, sing, joke and have conversations in the language that feels most natural to your family.

Your child’s mother tongue doesn’t need to make room for English.

Their world simply has room for both.
